Three new members join the Christchurch Call

Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF), a global fund dedicated to preventing violent extremism, is now a formal partner of the Call.

MEGA, a cloud storage and communications system, and Clubhouse, a live audio platform are supporters, and also bring their experience and expertise to the Call Community.

"The Call is a multi-stakeholder initiative, as governments, businesses and civil society all have a role to play in making the internet a better place. We welcome GCERF, MEGA and Clubhouse and look forward to seeing their contribution to the Call Community,” said Henri Verdier, French Ambassador for Digital Affairs.

"GCERF brings a valuable perspective and extensive experience to the work of the Christchurch Call. Its grassroots work with vulnerable communities around the world to prevent violent extremism, and its willingness to share the lessons of that work, will contribute greatly to the Call community’s ongoing efforts,” said Paul Ash, New Zealand's Special Representative for Cyber and Digital. “Like the Call, GCERF is founded on a multi-stakeholder approach, commitment to human rights, accountability and transparency.”

"GCERF is committed to preventing online radicalisation and we are happy to join the Christchurch Call. Our whole-of-society approach to preventing extremism complements the multistakeholder nature of the Christchurch call. We are determined to build, learn, and share practical knowledge from our grassroots programming to support the Call’s community in their efforts to eliminate violent extremist content online,” said Dr Khalid Koser, Executive Director of GCERF.

Henri Verdier highlights the value of adding a live audio streaming platform to the Call Community. “Clubhouse is a young company, but it has built a strong trust and safety team, embracing transparency reporting and adopting both automated and manual content moderation techniques while accommodating human rights norms and maintaining the privacy of its users. It is clearly committed to working with governments and the wider Call Community to improve its policies and approaches, learn from others and share its experience.”

“We’re proud to be part of this critical initiative to keep the internet a safe and inclusive place for people around the world,” said Amre Metwally, Clubhouse’s Policy Lead. “We hope by sharing our Trust & Safety learnings made while pioneering the social audio space, we can help Christchurch Call and fellow supporters with this imperative mission."

“MEGA is well respected internationally for its fast and comprehensive response to instances of terrorist and violent extremist content online, and is proactive in its work to counter the spread of such material. It also has a robust approach to transparency reporting and human rights protections. MEGA is eager to contribute to the work of the Call and will be a valuable addition to the Community,” says Paul Ash.

"The Christchurch Call is an excellent forum to engage with Governments and Civil Society in our shared commitments to address the issue of terrorist and violent extremist content online” said Stephen Hall, Executive Chairman of MEGA.

Since its launch in 2019, the Christchurch Call Community has grown each year. Over 120 members across governments, online service providers and civil society organisations are working to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.
